Overview

Old Delhi is Shah Jahan's walled city of 1650, and it has barely slowed down since. Narrow lanes, the largest mosque in India, a fortress of red sandstone, and a street food culture that people travel across the country for.

This half-day tour is built around walking and tasting rather than ticking off monuments. Pickup is at 9:00 AM from your hotel anywhere in Delhi/NCR and you are back by about 1:00 PM. It also runs well as an afternoon tour — tell us which you prefer.

The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and seat of Mughal power.

Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque, with a courtyard for 25,000.

Cycle rickshaw ride through the lanes of Chandni Chowk.

Guided walking food tasting — parathas, chaat, kebabs and jalebi.

Khari Baoli, Asia's largest spice market.

Private air-conditioned car, driver and licensed guide throughout.

Your Day, Hour by Hour

  1. 9:00AM

    Pickup from your hotel

Your driver and licensed guide collect you at 9:00 AM from your hotel anywhere in Delhi/NCR for the short drive into the old city.

  2. 9:45AM

    Red Fort

Tour the vast red sandstone fortress-palace built by Shah Jahan between 1639 and 1648, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the seat of Mughal power for nearly two centuries. India's Prime Minister still addresses the nation from its ramparts each Independence Day.

  3. 11:00AM

    Jama Masjid

Walk to India's largest mosque, completed in 1656 from red sandstone and white marble. Its courtyard holds 25,000 worshippers, and the view from the steps over the old city rooftops is one of Delhi's best.

  4. 11:45AM

    Chandni Chowk by rickshaw

Ride a cycle rickshaw through Shah Jahan's great bazaar — the silver market, the wedding bazaar, the book sellers, and Khari Baoli, the largest spice market in Asia. The lanes are too narrow and too busy for a car; the rickshaw is the only sensible way through.

  5. 12:15PM

Walking food tasting in Chandni Chowk

Step down and walk with your guide through the food lanes, tasting as you go — stuffed parathas from Paranthe Wali Gali, chaat, kebabs and hot jalebi. Your guide chooses stalls that are busy, long-established and safe for visitors, and explains each dish.

  6. 1:00PM

    Drop-off

Dropped back at your hotel or anywhere in Delhi/NCR.
